Showdown: Xbox Media center VS. Xbox 360
There has been a lot of hype about Xbox 360's media capabilities, but is it really that much better?
The 360 works right out of the box (no modding required) and can connect to your Windows Media Center Edition PC and stream MPEG ½ and WMV videos. It can also download demos and movie trailers off of Xbox live. However, it is limited in the file formats it can use and requires Windows Media Center on your PC to stream videos (pictures and audio will work without).
XBMC (Xbox Media Center) is a free open-source media player for the original Xbox. It can load files from a CD/DVD or stream it from your computer. It can even stream directly from the internet. XBMC has playlist and slideshow functions, a weather forecast and many audio visualizations. The greatest thing about XBMC is the formats it can handle.
XBMC handles many popular formats including:
- MPEG-1/2/4
- DivX
- XviD
- H.264
- RealMedia
- QuickTime
- MP3
- AAC
- JPG
- GIF
- BMP
- and more!!!
So, after reviewing the two media sytems (and using each one) I have come to the conclusion that XBMC is a better media system than the built-in 360 one.

Hey, keadin. My first post. Call when you can to discuss the reschedule
Nice Review!
do you know if Xbox Media Center can handle WMV HD files>
It doesn't because the xbox has no HD output!
I'm going to have to disagree with your review, I'd say that the 360 MCE connector is not a perfect 10 for installation, it's not perfectly easy to hook up. As for installation of the XBMC, I'd probably rate it even lower because most that get mods, soft or hard have a professional do it. But a good review all in all, let people know their options and they an choose.
A softmod isn't all that hard to install, I installed mine in a day with minimal knowledge.
